After pouring oil into the engine there is still a fair ammount of oil still in the quart container, so what you do is screw the "empty" quart upside down into a collector. 4 of the emptys are connected upside down into the device and the 5th is under all of them and collects all the left over oil. If I do find out what I am talking about I will post a link, but if you can figure out what the heck I am talking about PLEASE let me know, and hook me up with a link or what-have-you.

Motorsport world mourns Duckworth.
Tue 20 Dec, 9:50 AM

One of the most influential men in modern motorsport, Keith Duckworth, has died at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy that covers the sport from top to bottom.

Although best known for his part in reshaping Formula One with the first Cosworth engine, Duckworth's impact on the sport ran far deeper, as Cosworth - the company he founded with fellow engineer Mike Costin - became synonymous with engines that were competitive both on track and on the price list.

Duckworth's introduction to the motorsport industry came when he accepted the role of transmission engineer at the fertile breeding ground of Lotus Cars, his first job after completing his studies at Imperial College in London. Having served a year's 'apprenticeship' under the guidance of Colin Chapman's active imagination, the Lancastrian joined forces with fellow Lotus employee Costin to work on ideas for Ford's road car engines, and Cosworth - the name derived from the surnames of the two founders - was born.

Despite the work the company initially, and subsequently, carried out, it is the three-litre F1 V8 - which won on debut and continued to prove successful in a variety of guises over the next 20+ years - for which Duckworth will be best remembered.

With Ford looking to improve its image through motorsport, and with the late Walter Hayes securing a £100,000 budget to invest in a Cosworth-designed powerplant, Duckworth and Costin set about developing two motors - a 1.6-litre unit for F2 and the F1 V8. Duckworth was credited with the design of both engines - a role Hayes later described as helping 'establish this country - in an international fashion, not a silly flag-waving fashion - as the place you go to have motor racing cars and engines made'.

The two engines would go on to share legendary status, with the FVA proving successful in F2 and the DFV - standing for Double Four Valve - immediately establishing its reputation by won on debut in the hands of Jim Clark and Lotus at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix. Not only did its instant competitiveness prove attractive, so too did the asking price, and the DFV would provide a cornerstone for some of Britain's most ambitious small teams, including Brabham and Williams, to get a foothold on the F1 ladder.

The engine, with occasional tweaks, carried on winning races until 1982, eventually settling for a tally of 154 successes before its retirement was effectively enforced by the turbo era. However, while the Cosworth name was gradually overwhelmed in F1, it continued to race strongly, as the DFX, in the US Indycar series, while the ideas were also used successful in Ford's rally programme, with the BDA unit. The company not only developed technology, however, but also churned out talented individuals such as Mario Ilien, who would go on to found Ilmor Engineering.

Duckworth and Costin eventually sold Cosworth, initially to United Engineering Industries, and the company has changed hands several times since, eventually ending up as part of the Audi and Ford empires, before almost being dragged down by the Blue Oval's disappointing involvement with the Jaguar Racing F1 team. Fortunately, Champ Car owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe saw the benefit of buying the company, and now run Cosworth units exclusively in the US series.

In recent years, the Cosworth name has returned to Formula One circles - notably helping out another much-loved minnow, Minardi - but it is perhaps apt that Duckworth passes knowing that the company he helped found will return in partnership with Williams in 2006.

Buddy Lazier was the first news of the day... about 10 minutes into practice he put his #95 car hard into Turn 4 wall... Lazier climbed out of his car without assistance, was examined and released from the track hospital and is cleared to drive on Sunday. Panther Racing will attempt to repair the #95 car so that it can start in it's regular position, 9th on the grid.

The track was quickly cleared and by 11:20 all 33 cars had been on the track for practice. The remaining 40 minutes of practice were uneventful.

Well the day started off promising to be a bit boring, with only one car in the garage with a driver and one driver to drive it.

Arie Luyendyk Jr was the only car/driver combination left in the garage left to qualify, and with 1 slot available, he made his attempt at about 3pm. Luyendyk Jr qualified 33rd with a 4 lap average of 215.039mph, easily the slowest of the field.

About 45 minutes later, AJ Foyt put Filipe Giaffone in a car for the 1st time this year. About a half hour later Giaffone had his car up to Luyendyk Jr's speed. Giaffone said at about 1:30p he was at Babies 'R Us shopping when he got the call to come to the Speedway. 2 hours later he was on the track trying to get his car up to speed.

At about 5:30p, Giaffone made his qualifying attempt and easily bumped out Luyendyk Jr with a 4 lap average of 217.645mph.

Luyendyk Jr made another attempt to bump his way back in, but clearly didn't have the experience and/or car to do it. His fastest lap of his qualifying attempt was 214.123mph. IMNSHO, Luyendyk Jr didn't belong out there yet, he clearly wasn't ready. As much as I personally don't like Foyt, it was the right decision to get Giaffone in a car and qualified.

The field is set. The track will be closed until Friday, May 27, Carb Day, when they'll get one last practice for an hour, from 11a-12noon.

Good news for the teams who are still trying to qualify, especially Arie Luyendyk Jr. Luyendyk Jr. will need to complete Rookie Orientation AND take enough laps to get his car up to speed.

Yesterday was the first day since 2001 that an entire day of practice was washed out.

Reports are that there are 11 car/driver combinations left to attempt to qualify. If that holds to be true, bumping shouldn't be a concern for anyone. The main concerns lie with Luyendyk Jr and Larry Foyt. With Luyendyk Jr, it's completing the Rookie Orientation and getting the car up to speed. With Larry Foyt, it's keeping the sponsorship to keep the $$$ flowing. As it stands now, AJ Foyt is footing a significant portion of Larry Foyt's ride and that's never a good thing. But considering those two drivers are needed to maintain the traditional 33 car/driver combos, I don't see them missing the race. Anything less than 33 cars in the race will be seen as a further proof that Tony George is "ruining" the Indy 500 in the battle over open wheel racing superiority.

Track opens for practice at 12p Noon. They'll probably open the track early for Luyendyk Jr.'s Rookie Orientation.

With Pole Day qualifications washed out, Indy qualified 22 cars on Sunday, instead of the scheduled 11.

It was cool and overcast in Indianapolis. At noon, when qualifying was scheduled to start, the air temp was 53 degrees, with a track temp of 78 degrees.

Practice started at 9:30am and while the air was chilly, the speed was not.

Tony Kanaan quickly ripped off a 228.9mph lap, which was followed Danica Patrick with three laps of 228.9mph, 229.3mph and 229.880mph, fastest of the month. Dario Franchitti got into the act with a fast lap of 229.4mph.

Fast Five in morning practice:

1 Danica Patrick 229.880 mph
2 Dario Franchitti 229.422 mph
3 Tony Kanaan 228.920 mph
4 Vitor Meira 228.666 mph
5 Sam Hornish Jr. 228.356 mph

Note: while all these speeds are fast, speeds in practice will be faster than qualifying because of "tow". Essentially the same thing as drafting in NASCAR. During qualifying, they will be making the 4 laps all on their own.

Due to the cool temps, drivers were given 3 warmup laps rather than the normal 2.

The process is as follows. Cars are placed in a qualifying order by random lot. All cars will have at least 1 opportunity to try for the pole. Each car will have 3 attempts to qualify per day. Once a car qualifies, the car can be withdrawn and another attempt made. Cars will make 3 warmup laps followed by 4 "hot" laps. The attempt can be waived off at any time. The cars will be placed in order by the average speed of the 4 hot laps (10 miles). The fastest 22 cars will be qualified. Qualifying will end at 6p EST. So long as the car is on the track doing it's warmup laps by 6p it will count as an attempt. If a car can't make it out of inspection by 6p, the day is over.

Tony Kanaan was the first to post a quick 4-lap average 227.556mph. Next up with a shot of dislodging Kanaan was the newest celebrity at the track, Danica Patrick. With the fastest lap of the morning, Patrick was given good odds to take the pole.

All was going great during the 3 warmup laps, but disaster nearly struck on turn 1 of the first hot lap. A bobble in turn one cause Patrick to nearly lose control and she lost 3 mph, posting a 224.920mph. She recovered nicely to post 3 of the fastest laps in qualifying, including a 227.860mph, fastest of the day. But the slow speed from the first lap dragged her 4 lap average down to 227.004mph. Visibly upset with herself for the bobble, Patrick had to settle for that speed. Rumours had her withdrawing her car and trying to qualify a second time, but those were quickly quashed by Bobby Rahal.

“I just don’t think we were quite comfortable with the setup. The first lap is key, and we couldn't really get to where we needed to be on that first lap so we could go fast, but I don't think we would have been consistent enough, so we had some discussion for the better part of an hour. Pretty darn good, fifth on the grid so far. She had a tremendous week, so we’ll put it away and get ready for the race.” -- Bobby Rahal

Sam Hornish Jr was the first to pull his car off of the grid and attempt to requalify. Hornish pulled his car which qualified at 225.847mph and made a second attempt. This time it was a hot one, putting himself 2nd on the grid with a 227.273mph.

Cars continued to qualify shortly after 5 when the top 22 slots were filled. Then the bumping began. First on the bubble was Alex Barron with a 219.958mph. He was bumped by Dario Franchitti, who posted a 226.475mph, good for 7th position on the grid. Franchitti had made an attempt earlier in the day but after posting a 222mph speed waived the attempt off. About 15 minutes, later Andretti/Green racing withdrew Franchitti's car in an attempt to make run for the pole. This left 21 cars on the grid (Alex Barron had withdrawn his car to attempt to requalify).

Alex Barron headed out onto the track and put his car back into the grid with a speed of 221.053, placing Patrick Carpentier on the bubble.

At 5:44, Franchitti made his 3 and final attempt of the day. Franchitti pulled his car off the grid which was qualified 7th. He posted fast times, but was unable to improve his time and requalified his car in the 7th positions, bumping Patrick Carpentier off of the grid. Jacques Lazier was now on the bubble with a speed of 220.034mph.

Carpentier's day wasn't complete yet. Penske decided that he wasn't happy with Castroneves's 4th qualifying position and withdrew his car so Castroneves could make another attempt. With Castroneves withdrawn, Carpentier was back on the grid. But it wouldn't last long as Castroneves completed his 4 laps. But Penske's gamble didn't pay off as Castroneves qualified 5th, switching spots with Danica Patrick.

Rookie Jeff Bucknum completed the days qualifing bumping Jacques Lazier off with a 4-lap average of 221.521mph.

Qualifying ended with Tony Kanaan winning the pole position for the 89th Indianapolis 500.

Welcome to Fast Friday, the last day before Pole Day.

Today we should see some really fast speeds, don't be surprised to see them above 228mph.

Weather for today - Partly cloudy with scattered strong storms developing during the afternoon. Warm. High 81F. Winds SSW at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

Notes about tires at Indianapolis. Each team is given 35??? sets of tires for the month of May. They use them for practice, qualifying and raceday. Consequently you may see some people not running as much as they'd like to conserve tires. Such was the case yesterday when Danica Patrick didn't make an appearance on the track later in the day. Patrick had to run 2 extra days of practice for Rookie Orientation so she wanted to spare some of her tires.

Some quotes:

“It was a really good day. We went in the right direction the whole time, which doesn't always happen. Sometimes you take steps back, but we made the car better and better. I'm happy with it. I told them to take notes on however the car came back to the garage.” -- Danica Patrick

“It's obviously great to qualify on the pole, and that's what we're working toward, there's no doubt about it. You've got to have one eye on the race, but right now everything seems to be going pretty good. There are the occasional 'Indianapolis 500 blues' where you go out in the afternoon and nothing goes like it was going in the morning, so you have to work back and find out why, but that's the joy of the Indianapolis 500.” -- Dan Wheldon

“Such a shame for yesterday with Buddy (Rice). It's certainly something we didn't want, but Vitor (Meira) and Danica have carried the team as a result. I'm as proud of that as I am of anything. The team is working very well together, very similar to last year. The speeds and the times and the consistencies of them are reflections of that, so I'm pretty happy right now, with the exception of what happened to Buddy.” -- Bobby Rahal

“On the spin, I had just thrown a downshift as we were exiting the corner, and it looks like the shift hung up and locked the rears for an instant. It’s a miracle we didn’t break the car in half. I got lucky on that one." -- Paul Dana

Practice starts at 12:00 EST!

Adrian Fernandez is in an interesting situation. Fernandez is the owner of the Ferndandez Racing which is fielding two cars, Kosuke Matsuura and Scott Sharp. But after sponsorships fell a few months ago Fernandez had to give up his own seat. Now through an odd arraignment with Mo Nunn, Fernandez is back in a car, for a different team. The two teams are separate but have been collaborating with sharing garages and information. That sharing is due to end on race day.

More news later... Track opens for practice at 12:00p EST.

A note about times... All times will be Eastern STANDARD Time. Indiana is currently one of three states to not observe Daylight Saving Time. Consequently, while we're in the Eastern Time Zone, we're essentially the same time as Central Time. Remember EST=CDT. This will change next year as Indiana has finally decided to move into DST starting next spring. Additionally, this year's race has been pushed back an hour at the request of ABC Sports. This years race will be at 12p EST/1p EDT.

Yesterday's Hot Lap was courtesy of Dan Wheldon who turned a 226.8mph lap.

If you haven't heard there are some changes to the qualifying procedure here at Indianapolis. Qualifying is again 4 days with bumping occuring on EACH day. On the first 3 days of qualifying only 11 cars will qualify each day.

Day 1, positions 1-11
Day 2, positions 12-22
Day 3, positions 23-33
Day 4, Bump Day

Bumping will occur on each day, with cars getting 3 qualifying attempts PER DAY, rather than 3 overall.
